This uses Canvas's built-in **Redirect Tool** to add a shortcut link without any extra software or integration work. ###### Before You Start * **This guide is primarily intended for Canvas Admins.** Adding the link at the account or sub-account level (Step 1) always requires Canvas Admin access - teachers cannot do this themselves. * Adding the link to a single course *can* sometimes be done by a teacher directly, but only if your district's Canvas admin has granted the **"External Apps"** permission to the Teacher role. Many K-12 districts restrict this to admins only. * If you're a teacher and you don't see an **Apps** tab under your course **Settings**, this has been restricted for your role and you'll need an admin to set this up. * For the link to sign users in automatically, your SSO with SpacesEDU should already be configured. See our [Single Sign-On (SSO) - Setup Guide](https://help.spacesedu.com/en-ca/article/single-sign-on-sso-setup-guide-e1bw45/) if that hasn't been set up yet. * Send us a message or email hello@spacesedu.com for confirmation of the destination URL to use. If you've already saved a link starting with app.spacesedu.com/sso/ or ca.spacesedu.com/sso/, and it brings users directly into their accounts via SSO, this is the correct URL. For an admin who already has Canvas access and the destination URL in hand, this typically takes **5–10 minutes**. If you haven't added external apps to Canvas before or require internal approval, budget **15–30 minutes**, plus the time to complete your district or school's review process. --- ## Step 1: Choose where the link should appear * **User:** the link appears for everyone in that account (or school/district), in the tray menu when a user clicks their Profile/Account icon at the top left of the global navigation bar. This is the recommended option for a district-wide or school-wide rollout, and always requires Canvas Admin access. * **Course:** the link appears in the secondary navigation menu for a course, below Home, Modules, Grades, etc. This can be useful for piloting with select classes before rolling out more broadly. Also requires Canvas Admin access, *unless* your district's Canvas admin has already granted teachers the "External Apps" permission - check with them if you're a teacher without access to your course's Apps tab. * **Account:** this is not recommended for SpacesEDU, unless you have a custom Canvas configuration that surfaces account-level navigation for students and teachers. This option adds the link in the Admin side-panel menu when viewing sub-accounts or institution settings. ## Step 2: Add the Redirect Tool 1. Log in to Canvas with administrator access. 2. For user-level navigation (*recommended*), click **Admin** in the global navigation bar, then select your root account, or a sub-account with the user groups you'd like to give access to SpacesEDU. 3. For course navigation, search for the specific course where you'd like to add the link via **Admin > Courses**, and click the course title. 4. Click **Settings** at the bottom of the left-hand nav menu, then click the **Apps** tab at the top of the screen. 5. Click **Add App** 7. Fill in the fields: * **Name** - the text that you'd like to appear in the navigation menu (*e.g*. "SpacesEDU" or "My Portfolio"). * **URL Redirect** - the destination URL provided by your SpacesEDU contact. * **Show in Course Navigation / Account Navigation / User Navigation** - check the box(es) matching where you want the link to appear. Note that if you check off 'Show in Course Navigation' from the root account settings, this will add the link to navigation for *all* courses within your Canvas environment. * **Force open in new tab** - this must be turned **ON.** SpacesEDU does not support iFrame display within Canvas or other applications, so if this option is unchecked, the app won't work. ![Redirect Tool - Add App Screen](https://storage.crisp.chat/users/helpdesk/website/-/7/3/c/e/73cedb42449e6800/image_p9fgwk.png) 8. Click **Add App**, then refresh the page. ## Step 3: Test the link 1. Log in as a test student, or ask a student to test. 2. Confirm that the link opens SpacesEDU, and that the user is brought into their account automatically. That's it - you're all set for access to SpacesEDU through Canvas! * If you need to edit or delete the link, return to the **Settings > Apps** page where you added it. Look for SpacesEDU (or the name you selected), and click the gear icon, then **Edit** or **Delete**. * Options added to course navigation can be re-ordered by opening the course **Settings**, and clicking **Navigation.** Drag and drop to reorder, then save your changes. --- ###### Considerations & Limitations * The Redirect Tool only adds a link; it doesn't handle authentication. For a seamless experience, we recommend implementing SSO with the same IdP for both Canvas and SpacesEDU. * If you don't have SSO set up, you can still follow the instructions with one of the standard URLs below. Users will land on a SpacesEDU sign-in page instead of being signed in automatically. **United States:** https://account.app.myblueprint.org/ **Canada / International:** https://account.ca.myblueprint.org/ * Whether teachers can add the link to their own course depends on district-level Canvas permissions. To allow this as an administrator, you can grant the 'LTI - add' permission for teachers **(Admin > Permissions > Course Roles)**. * A link added at the course level only appears in that course. To make it visible district- or school-wide, add it at the account level instead. * Conversely, if a redirect is configured to 'Show in Course Navigation' at the root account level, this will add SpacesEDU to the navigation menu for *all* courses. Unless this is your intent, select this option only for specific courses, or a sub-account containing only courses where SpacesEDU is a relevant navigation item. * This integration allows users to easily access SpacesEDU from within Canvas.
