Can students unsubmit an activity?

Teachers have the option to allow students to unsubmit their work if they need to make changes after their initial submission. This feature provides flexibility for students to refine their work before it is finalized.

Before You Start

• Default Setting: The ability for students to unsubmit is turned OFF by default for all new activities.
• Locking: Once a teacher has Locked or Posted a submission, the student can no longer unsubmit, even if the feature is enabled for the activity.
• Unlocking: If a teacher unlocks a submission, it moves back to the "Submitted" state, allowing the student to unsubmit (provided the setting is enabled).

Enabling Student Unsubmission

Teachers can enable this feature during the activity creation process or by editing an existing activity.

1. Open Activity Settings: While creating or editing an activity, scroll to the settings section.
2. Toggle Unsubmit: Switch the Allow students to unsubmit toggle to ON.
3. Save Changes: Ensure you save the activity to apply the new setting.

How Students Unsubmit Work

If the teacher has enabled unsubmission, students can follow these steps to pull back their work:

1. Navigate to Activities: Open the Activities tab in the class.
2. Find the Activity: Select the Closed tab (or the tab where the submitted activity is located).
3. Select Activity: Click on the specific activity they wish to edit.
4. Unsubmit: Click the blue Unsubmit button in the top right corner.

Managing Submissions as a Teacher

Teachers maintain final control over when a submission is finalized through the "Lock" and "Unlock" features.

• To Lock a Submission:
• 1. Open the Activities tab and select the activity.
  2. In the Quick Review Table, locate the student.
  3. Select the dropdown menu beside their name and click Lock submission.
• To Unlock a Submission:
• 1. Follow the same steps as above, but select Unlock submission.
  2. Warning: If a submission has already been posted to the feed, unlocking it will remove the post and any associated comments.

Good to Know

• Student Visibility: When unsubmission is enabled, students see a specific message in their submission dialog: "Your teacher has allowed you to unsubmit your activity should you need to make any changes prior to the activity being locked."
• Individualized Assessment: Teachers can edit tags and proficiencies at the individual student level even while a submission is in the "Submitted" or "Locked" state.
• Drafts: When teachers move between students in the Quick Review screen, their work is automatically saved as a draft.
