What notifications will I receive from SpacesEDU?

Learn more about all the different notifications you might receive, depending on the type of account you have.

SpacesEDU includes notifications for many important events related to your account, keeping you up to date in real time. This article summarizes all of the different notifications that we send, how you'll receive them, and what configurable options are available.

Events may generate an email notification, an in-app notification (shown as a red dot at the top right within your account in a web browser or in our iOS / Android app), or a push notification from the iOS/Android app. Some events will notify you in more than one way, and some are aggregated - if 5 students add posts in a short span of time, for example, you'll receive one combined notification rather than 5 separate ones.

Along with the account-related notifications listed below, you may receive additional emails or in-app messages from the SpacesEDU team providing helpful tips and resources to get started, news about product updates and invitations to share your feedback.

Teacher Account

As a teacher, you'll receive a notification:

  • When you first create your account (Email)

  • When you are invited by another teacher to create an account or join a class as a co-teacher (Email)

  • If you request a password reset (Email)

  • If your password has been successfully reset (Email)

  • When a student creates a post (Email, In-App, Push Notification)

  • When you receive a new message (Email, In-App, Push Notification)

  • When anyone reacts or comments on a teacher-created post (In-App, Push Notification)

  • When a new student, co-teacher, or family member has signed up to your class (Email, In-App, Push Notification)

  • When a new comment is added to a post that you've already commented on (In-App, Push Notification)

  • When a family member comments on a post (In-App, Posh Notification)

Student Account

As a student, you'll receive a notification:

  • When you first create your account (Email)

  • When you have signed up to a new class (Email)

  • If you request a password reset (Email)

  • If your password has been successfully reset (Email)

  • When a teacher has added a post to your account, or to the entire class (Email, In-App, Push Notification)

  • When you receive a new message (Email, In-App, Push Notification)

  • When anyone reacts or comments on a post you've created (Email, In-App, Push Notification)

  • When a new family member has signed up to your class (Email, In-App, Push Notification)

  • When a new Portfolio is made available by your school, or any posts and comments are added to your Portfolio (Email, In-App, Push Notification)

Family Account

As a family member linked to a student's class, you'll receive a notification:

  • When you first create your account (Email)

  • When you're invited by a teacher to sign up to a new class (Email)

  • If you request a password reset (Email)

  • If your password has been successfully reset (Email)

  • When a linked student creates a new post (Email, In-App, Push Notification)

  • When you receive a new message (Email, In-App, Push Notification)

  • When a teacher has added a new post to the account of a linked student, or to their entire class (Email, In-App, Push Notification)

  • When anyone comments on a post in your linked student's account (Email, In-App, Push Notification)

  • When an activity is assigned to your linked student, an activity is coming due soon, or an activity has not been submitted by the due date (Email, In-App, Push notification)

Notification Settings

Don't want to receive certain types of notifications? By default, you'll receive all notifications in the formats listed above, but you can customize many notifications through your account.

  • When logged in through a Web browser, click on the bell icon at the top right, then the 'gear' button to access the notification settings:

  • In the iOS / Android app:

  1. Tap on your avatar or initials at the top right of the screen

  2. Tap Notifications

  3. Tap the gear button to access the settings

You can configure whether you wish to receive notifications for:

  • Posts from students and co-teachers

  • Comments from students and co-teachers

  • Reactions to your posts

In the web interface, you can also select whether you want to be notified through in-app, email notifications, or both; in the iOS / Android app, you can additionally enable or disable push notifications.

Delayed and Combined Notifications

To avoid sending too many emails, some notifications are delayed so they can be combined together. These aggregate notifications are sent out via email once per hour. For example, if a whole class of students is completing an activity, you won't see an email notification immediately - leaving you with 20-30 emails - instead, you'd receive an email within an hour indicating the number of students that submitted your activity.

In-app notifications should be updated in near real-time, meaning you'd see new activity submissions right away from your account in a Web browser or in the iOS/Android app. If multiple students complete an action within an hour, they are also grouped together in the notification panel.
