What are Private Comments?
Comments are a powerful tool for engaging with students and their families. Depending on the type of Space you are using, comments can be open discussions or private reflections. This article explains how comment permissions work across Class, 1:1, Group, and Reporting Spaces.
Comment Visibility by Space Type
The visibility of comments depends on the Space where the post is located.
Space Type | Who can see comments? |
|---|---|
Class Space | All students selected for the post, and their linked families (if the Space is Active) |
1:1 Space | Only the teacher and the individual student |
Reporting Space | Only the teacher and the individual student |
Group Space | Only the members of that specific group and their linked families |

Class Spaces
Within a Class Space, if you select multiple students or the entire class, everyone shares a single copy of the post. This post has one combined comment section.
- Visible for students: Only teachers can add comments.
- Active for students: Students can comment and respond to each other.
- Teacher control: Teachers can configure whether students view and comment on posts created by other students. This setting applies to individual student posts, not posts shared across the whole class. For more details on adjusting these permissions, see How can I update Space settings?.
1:1 and Reporting Spaces
In 1:1 and Reporting Spaces, teachers can add posts for multiple students at once, such as a broadcast announcement. However, this creates a separate copy of the post in each student's personal space.
- Privacy: Tags and comments added to these posts are never visible to other students or their families.
- Independence: Edits made in one student's 1:1 Space do not appear in any other student's account.
Group Spaces
When posting to Group Spaces, teachers select one or more groups. This creates a separate copy of the post for each group.
- Group visibility: Comments are visible to all students in that group and their linked family members.
- Isolation: Students in one group can never see posts or comments from other groups.
Good to Know
Students and family members can never view or add comments on other students' posts in 1:1 spaces, reporting spaces, or other groups' posts in group spaces. To share content for the entire class to discuss together, use the Class Space. You can also copy a post from another space into your Class Space as a teacher.
