What are Private Comments?
Comment Permissions and Space Types
Comments are a great way to engage with your students and their families. You can use posts in your Class Space to foster an open discussion, but 1:1, Group, and Reporting Spaces are better suited to sharing private reflections or group-specific feedback.
Teachers can always select different students when adding a post, but posts with multiple students - and comments on those posts - work differently depending on the type of space you're posting to.

Class Spaces
- Within a Class Space, if you select multiple students (or all students within a class), all selected students share a single copy of the post.
- Edits to shared posts in class spaces are visible to all students once they are saved.
- This post also has one combined comment section, visible to all students selected when creating the post (unless the space is set as Hidden for students).
- If the space is set to Visible for students, then only teachers will be able to add comments to posts in the Class Space.
- If the space is set to Active for students, then they will be able to comment and respond to each others' comments on any posts shared between them. In an active class space, students will always be able to comment on posts they've created themselves, posts that their teacher has added only for them in a Class Space, and posts that are shared between multiple students.
- Along with being Active, there are separate options teachers can configure for whether students are able to view and comment on other students' posts. These only apply to posts that other students have created, and teacher posts targeting other students - not posts shared across multiple students in a Class Space.
1:1 Spaces and Reporting Spaces
- Within 1:1 Spaces, teachers can still add posts for multiple students at the same time, and broadcast an announcement or reflection prompt to everyone in the space.
- This creates a separate copy of the post in each student's own personal 1:1 space. Tags and comments added to these posts are never visible to other students or their families.
- Adding a shared post from a Class Space to a Reporting Space has the same effect - it adds a separate copy of that post to each student's space.
- Edits to posts in a student's 1:1 Spaces or Reporting Space will not be reflected in other students' spaces.
Group Spaces
- When adding posts within Group Spaces, teachers can select one or more groups. Individual students cannot be selected in group space posts.
- This creates a separate copy of the post for each selected group. Tags and comments on these posts are visible to all students in that group, and to linked family members, if the space is visible or active for them.
- If the space is set to Visible for students, then only teachers will be able to add comments to posts in the Group Space.
- If the space is set to Active for students, then they will be able to comment on any posts for their group, and respond to comments on posts from other group members.
- Students in Group Spaces can never see other groups' posts, or view / add comments on them.
Students and family members will never be able to view or add comments on other students' posts in 1:1 spaces, reporting spaces, or other groups' posts in group spaces. To add content that all students will be able to view and discuss together as a class, post to your Class Space! You can also use the option to copy a post from another space into your class space as a teacher.
