What is a Space?

A Space is where learning happens in SpacesEDU. Teachers create Spaces to organize how students share, reflect, and collaborate. There are three types:

Space type	What it does	Who sees posts
Class Space	A shared space for the whole class	All students (configurable)
1:1 Space	A private space between teacher and individual student	Only that student and the teacher
Group Space	A collaborative space for a subset of students	Only students in that group

Class Space

Every class you create includes a Class Space automatically. All students who join your class are linked to it.

Use a Class Space for:

Class-wide discussion prompts
Sharing files or media with all students
Student work you want the whole class to see (if settings allow)

Examples:

🎵 Music: students upload recordings and participate in peer assessments
💼 Entrepreneurship: students showcase marketing campaigns and get peer feedback

💡 Tip: You can control whether students see each other's posts and comments by updating your Space Settings.

1:1 Space

A 1:1 Space is private between you and each individual student. Other students cannot see posts in this space.

Use a 1:1 Space for:

Personal assignments and reflections
Private feedback
Work shared with families (if family access is enabled)

You don't need to create a separate 1:1 space for each student. Selecting all students when creating one will automatically generate an individual private space for each.

Examples:

🎨 Visual Arts: students upload personal artifacts to demonstrate skill development
📚 Capstone Project: students document their learning process and present finished work

💡 Tip: You can create multiple 1:1 Spaces per class to separate units, subject areas, or family-shared work.

Group Space

A Group Space lets a specific set of students collaborate together. Posts are visible to group members only, not the rest of the class.
Use a Group Space for:

Group projects and lab work
Peer evaluation within small groups
Collaborative assignments like literacy circles

When creating a Group Space, you can assign students:

Automatically: select the number of students per group
Manually: choose which students go in each group

Examples:

🔬 Science Lab: students collaborate on lab reports and upload media as a group
📖 Literacy Circles: students reflect on weekly readings and discuss themes together

Space Settings and Visibility

After creating a space, you can customize:

Title and header color
Description (to guide students on how to use the space)
Student and family access levels (Hidden, Visible, or Active)

Until you set a space to Visible or Active, students and families won't see it in their accounts. Once set to Active, students can select it when creating a post.
All posts from every space in your class appear in the main Feed. To view posts from a single space, click the space name on any post or go to Spaces and select it.

Good to Know

Every class has a Class Space by default. You only need to create 1:1 and Group Spaces.
Selecting all students for a 1:1 Space creates one private space per student in a single step.
Students in Group Spaces can see each other's posts within their group, but not posts from other groups.
You can create multiple spaces of any type per class.
