A gradebook is an indispensable tool for educators to record and monitor students' academic progress throughout a course or school year.

SpacesEDU's GrowthBook is our standards-based gradebook designed to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of teachers' assessment methods.

To get started with GrowthBook, click the Assessment tab at the top of any class, then click Growthbook.

GrowthBook is only available as an optional add-on feature with SpacesEDU Pro, so if you don't see this option, it may not be licensed by your school. If you're an administrator interested in this option for your school or district, email pro@spacesedu.com.

Adding to the GrowthBook

There are two ways to add assessments to the Growthbook:

  1. By enabling the 'Add Activity to GrowthBook' setting on an Activity

    1. you can enable this either when creating an activity, or by editing an activity after it has been saved.

    2. This option will add an entry linked to the activity, with any proficiencies that have already been applied in the activity pre-populated in the Growthbook.

      1. Along with a column for each individual curriculum tag on the activity, you will see an additional column where you can add an overall proficiency level for the activity submission.

      2. You can hover over the heading in green to see the full activity title, and click the chain icon to open the activity.

      3. Any proficiencies added directly within the GrowthBook will also appear when viewing the activity.

  2. By clicking the +Entry button at the bottom right of the GrowthBook screen

    1. This allows you to add assessments and curriculum tags that are not linked to an Activity in SpacesEDU

    2. These records are only visible within the GrowthBook for teachers, and not in the Activities section or in student accounts.

    3. GrowthBook entries are also included in the Proficiency Report, and its calculations for average or most recent.

    4. Because Growthbook Entries don't have associated posts, they aren't visible in the feed when you click a specific tag in the Proficiency Report.

Navigation and CSV Download

  • By default, the GrowthBook shows 10 students per page. You can toggle between pages at the bottom of the screen, or increase the page size to a max of 100.

  • You can search by student name using the search bar near the top of the screen, and apply filters by:

    • student name

    • curriculum tags

    • subjects (ie, tag sets)

    • GrowthBook entry titles

  • The download button at the top right allows staff to download CSV (comma-separated values) files with the assessment details from the GrowthBook and Proficiency Report.

    • CSV files can be opened using any spreadsheet application, including Microsoft Excel, Numbers for Mac OS, or Google Sheets.

    • If both features are enabled, the button will download a single .zip file with the CSV exports from the GrowthBook and the Proficiency Report.

    • You can open the .zip file from your browser's download history, or by double-clicking in Windows Explorer or Mac OS Files, then use the Extract option and select a folder to save the exported CSV files.

  • Within the GrowthBook CSV, you can find:

    • 1 row per student in the class

    • Separate columns for each student's last name, first name, and student ID (if available)

    • Columns for each curriculum tag and GrowthBook entry or activity, with the student proficiencies listed

    • Column headers for proficiency data include both the activity or entry name, and the full curriculum tag

  • The GrowthBook is available only in the desktop site for SpacesEDU, accessible using any supported Web browser on a computer. It is not accessible at this time on tablets or mobile devices.

Keyboard Shortcuts

  • To speed up the process of adding assessments in the Growthbook, you can use keyboard shortcuts!

  • Simply click on any cell, then either click a second time or press the Esc key to close the pop-up menu and enable data entry with your keyboard

    • You can navigate between cells with the arrow keys - you'll see an outline around the active cell at any given time

    • You can add or update a proficiency level with the number keys

    • To remove a proficiency without adding a new value, press backspace

  • With our default Level 1-4 proficiency scale, the levels correspond with the number keys 1-4.

    • To see your active proficiency scale and the corresponding keyboard shortcuts, click the Shortcuts button at the top right

    • Proficiency levels and keyboard shortcuts can both be customized at the district level. If you're a district or school lead for SpacesEDU and you'd like to request changes, please contact SpacesEDU Support with the messaging option in the corner of your screen.
