Getting Started with Portfolios for Teachers and Students

Portfolios allow students and teachers to organize and showcase learning outside of Classes and Spaces. Students can copy posts from multiple Spaces into one place or create new posts directly within a Portfolio.

Before You Start

  • Portfolios are only available to schools and districts using SpacesEDU Pro with Portfolios enabled.
  • Portfolio templates (names, sections, attachments) are configured by your district administrator. Contact them for any changes to section names or pre-set content.
  • Teachers and students can customize: which posts are included, and the Summary Statement at the top of the portfolio (max 5,000 characters).

Accessing Portfolios

  1. Click the Home button (top left) to return to the home screen
  2. Click the Portfolios tab at the top of the screen
  3. Select a portfolio from the Active tab

Each portfolio contains a Home section (all posts) plus up to 20 sub-sections with titles defined by your administrator.

💡 Tip: You can also add posts to a portfolio from within a class. Click the ⋯ menu on any post, then select Copy Post.

  2. The first time you open a portfolio, you'll see a full-screen description with any attachments. Click Get Started to begin.
  3. Navigate to a section, or stay on the Home view
  4. Click Create (bottom right)
  5. Add your content:

Creating Posts in a Portfolio — Teachers

Teachers see a class-level view that shows all students and their progress across sections.

  1. Click Portfolios at the top of the home screen
  2. Click any portfolio name
  3. On the student list page:
    • Search or filter students by class or grade
    • View the number of posts each student has in each section
    • Click a student's name to open their full portfolio view
    • Click the âž• button next to a section to create a post for that student
  4. Add your content (same limits as student posts)
  5. Click Post

After posting, you're returned to the student list so you can quickly add content for the next student.

Copying Posts to a Portfolio

When you copy a post, you can choose to send the copy to a Portfolio instead of a Class:

  1. Click the ⋯ menu on any post
  2. Select Copy Post
  3. Click the Portfolio tab at the top of the screen
  4. Select the destination Portfolio and Section
  5. Select a student (one at a time)
  6. Click Save immediately after changing your post selections

The copied post includes all original attachments but not comments or Curriculum Tags.

💡 Tip: Save your post selections immediately after switching between Class and Portfolio. Drafts cannot be saved until you do.

Selecting Multiple Sections

A single post can be linked to multiple Portfolio sections. This is useful when student work demonstrates progress across several competencies or domains at once.

  • The same post appears in all selected sections
  • Comments on that post are visible across all linked sections
  • No need to duplicate the post

Presentation Mode (Students)

Students can showcase their portfolio in a full-screen presentation format.

Setting up a presentation:

  1. Open your portfolio
  2. Click the bookmark button on any post you want to include
  3. Click View Presentation (top right) to open the setup panel
  4. Use the arrow buttons to reorder posts
  5. Click Present to begin

During the presentation:

  • Use left/right arrow keys to navigate between posts
  • Click the control button (top right) to show Previous/Next buttons and a toggle for comments
  • Comments are hidden by default

Good to Know

  • Archived portfolios (from previous grades) remain visible in the Archived tab if the student added content. If they never added posts, the portfolio won't appear in their archive.
  • Section names, templates, and attachments are managed by your district administrator. Teachers and students cannot change these.
  • For assessment options within Portfolios, see Assessment in Portfolios.
  • To share a portfolio externally via link, see How do I share a portfolio?
