Account types and permissions
Free Accounts
Each SpacesEDU account provides different levels of access. The free version of SpacesEDU offers two account types: teachers and students.
Teachers can:
- create classes, 1:1 and group spaces
- invite students and family members to sign up and join classes
- invite co-teachers to share their class
- control their space settings
Students:
- can view posts added to the entire class, and comments on them
- may be able to create posts and comments, and may be able to view other students' posts and comments, depending on the settings for the space
Additional features for teachers and students, along with accounts for family and administrators, are available only with SpacesEDU Pro.
SpacesEDU Pro
Teacher accounts
Teachers at districts licensing SpacesEDU Pro can access a wide range of valuable extra features.
The specific features available for each teacher will depend on the configuration and options licensed by their school or district. These may include:
- Student and Family messages, including the option to toggle 2-way messaging
- Class rostering (pre-creation of classes and student accounts)
- QR Code Login
- Customized proficiency scales
- Proficiency Reports
- Reporting Spaces (including include Summary Statements and Areas of Learning)
Family Accounts
Family access is another key benefit of SpacesEDU Pro. After creating an account, family:
- can receive messages, and may be able to reply, depending on the settings applied by the teacher
- may be able to view and comment on posts by their linked students, or posts to the entire class, depending on the settings applied by the teacher
- cannot view comments added by other students' linked family members
Switching between accounts
You can have more than one type of account linked with the same email address. To switch between roles after adding a second account type, click on your avatar or initials at the top right of your account, and select the account you'd like to view.
Every account also has a colour-coded label — Teacher, Student, Family, or Administrator — shown near your avatar, so you can quickly confirm which type of account you're currently using. This is especially handy if you switch between accounts often, for example to preview what students or family members see in a class.

Admin accounts
SpacesEDU Pro also offers administrator accounts with powerful tools to onboard and manage your school or district.
These accounts can have access to one or more schools, or an entire district, with one of four distinct roles: Full Permissions, Staff Lead, Counsellor Lead, or Counsellor.
- Staff Lead (formerly Limited Permissions Admin) has read-only access to Student Manager, and can also turn Reporting Spaces' Admin Formal Review on or off. This capability was previously limited to Full Permissions admins.
- Counsellors and Counsellor Leads do not have access to manage other staff at their school(s). Both have access to manage students' high school plans and course selections. For schools using the Course Selection Module, this includes approving, re-allowing, or making changes to student submissions.
- Counsellor Leads additionally have full edit access to Course Manager and Course Selection Settings. Counsellors can view schools' course catalogues and settings, but cannot make changes.
- School admin accounts with any permission level, along with teacher accounts, can be created by a district admin with full permissions, or by a school admin with full permissions.
- District admin accounts with Staff Lead, Counsellor Lead, or Counsellor permissions can be created by a district admin with full permissions, or by the SpacesEDU support team.
- District admin accounts with full permissions can be created only by the SpacesEDU team.

The table below outlines feature access in detail for each account type and role.
